Laptop hard drive inaccessible on Desktop?

I want to format my laptop harddrive but my laptop crashed and i have to use my desktop. When i plug in my harddrive to the desktop it says that it is inaccessible. does anyone know how to make it accessible so i can reformat the hard drive?
