Questions about Law and Order SVU?

I have a question.... why is Detective Beck in some episodes instead of Detective Benson? I saw the episode when Benson discovered her brother and the person that was interviewing her and Stabler said that she and Stabler shouldnt work together anymore.... if thats so... where did Olivia go and why did she come back eventually Thanks!!! :)
